Utah Author R.W. Dove Brings Epic Fantasy Saga to New Heights with Third Installment of ‘Gods and Guardians’

SALT LAKE CITY — In a literary landscape crowded with epic quests and mythical realms, R.W. Dove stands out as a Utah-based storyteller whose “Gods and Guardians” series has captured hearts with its blend of high-stakes adventure, profound themes of destiny and resilience, and a seamless fusion of fantasy and science-fiction elements. The award-winning author’s debut, Gods and Guardians: Journey to the Plains of Amar, earned the 2024 International Impact Award for Science Fiction/Fantasy and the Marl Noble Recommendation, drawing comparisons to classics like The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter while carving its own path.

Now, with Gods and Guardians II: Escape from Durgurrum already thrilling readers and the third volume, Gods and Guardians III: Fall of Toganak,  slated for release this summer, Dove’s saga shows no signs of slowing. The upcoming book promises to deepen the journey of young hero Arthur and his companions, sending them toward the Elvish home world for a rigorous study of ancient magic at OstCala—the most renowned Elvish magical academy—while parallel storylines unfold with high-stakes peril for Arthur’s family and allies. It is, as Dove describes the series overall, “an adventure of a lifetime.”

Born in Alexandria, Virginia, Dove spent his early years in Fairfax before his family relocated to a quieter rural county. Growing up on a small farm instilled in him an appreciation for hard work, perseverance, and the simple wonders of nature—experiences that later informed the grounded emotional core of his characters. “I grew up on science fiction and fantasy,” Dove recalled in a recent interview. “I loved Star Wars and Star Trek as well as The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. I also really loved Greek mythology… All these different things helped influence my writing and its characters.”

Those influences shine through in a series that feels both timeless and fresh. Gods and Guardians: Journey to the Plains of Amar introduces readers to Arthur, a young man on the cusp of adulthood who discovers on his 18th birthday that his life is far from ordinary. After his mother, Emma, is violently attacked by a ruthless government official, Arthur, his family, and his closest friends—Samuel and Jared—are forced to flee the only home they have ever known. Their guide is Ebon, a mysterious beggar who is far more than he appears: a powerful guardian entity who has watched over Arthur for nearly two decades, waiting for the moment the young man would learn the shocking truth about his heritage—he is the offspring of a god.

Led by Ebon, the group forges the “Fellowship of the Trinity” and embarks on a perilous trek across a strange, unrecognizable world teeming with magic, monsters, and ancient secrets. Their destination: the high mountain plateau known as the Plains of Amar, once a sacred site of communion between gods and mortals, now a refuge for elvish allies and mythical beings long relegated to legend. Along the way, Arthur and his companions confront their deepest fears, forge unbreakable bonds of loyalty, and begin to grasp the immense destiny that rests on their shoulders. Dove’s prose paints vivid landscapes and pulse-pounding action sequences while never losing sight of the emotional stakes—Arthur’s battles with depression and loneliness resonate deeply with readers who see echoes of their own struggles.

The novel’s success opened the door for Gods and Guardians II: Escape from Durgurrum, which picks up the story with even greater urgency. Arthur, Samuel, and Jared find themselves in a desperate race against time, uncovering hidden truths about their destinies amid unimaginable challenges that test every ounce of their strength, courage, and loyalty. The sequel dives deeper into the dwarven realms, introducing the formidable fortress of Toganak and escalating threats from shadowy forces bent on destruction. Reviewers have praised the book’s “breathtaking action, unforgettable characters, and shocking twists,” noting how Dove blends sci-fi technology with classic fantasy tropes so seamlessly that “you sometimes forget where one ends and the other begins.” The pacing shifts between quiet, introspective moments and heart-pounding set pieces, keeping readers on the edge of their seats.

What sets the series apart, Dove says, is its unapologetic heart. “Life was never meant to be fair and rarely is,” he explains, “but close friends and family and a trust in something higher than yourself can help you overcome life’s obstacles.” The books are packed with moral lessons accessible to readers of all ages: the power of perseverance, the importance of keeping an open mind, the value of loyalty, and the quiet assurance that good ultimately triumphs over evil—even when the battles feel unwinnable. “We are not alone,” Dove emphasizes. “If no one else loves you, God still does.” These themes, drawn from his own experiences and a lifelong fascination with the paranormal and supernatural, give the series an uplifting quality that has earned it a devoted following.

Now, Gods and Guardians III: Fall of Toganak promises to expand the canvas dramatically. As Arthur and his friends press onward to the Elvish home world, they will receive intensive training in Elvish magic at OstCala, the most prestigious academy of its kind. Yet the stakes rise on multiple fronts. While Arthur’s mother, Emma, and his sister grapple with their own harrowing struggles, the dwarves are forced to flee the besieged fortress of Toganak. Simultaneously, Emma and her companions must navigate a treacherous path toward the mystical Emerald Lake. The narrative will weave these parallel threads into a tapestry of courage, sacrifice, and discovery, continuing the never-ending battle between light and darkness.

Dove, who now calls Utah home, approaches his craft with disciplined creativity. Early in the writing process, scenes played out vividly in his mind; as the cast of characters and intricate world-building grew, he began keeping a dedicated notebook filled with names, places, and plot threads to maintain consistency. “When I am writing I can see the scenes playing out clearly in my mind,” he says, “but with so many names and places I get easily confused.” That meticulous preparation has paid off: the series is projected to span four books, with potential spin-offs exploring the backstories of beloved secondary characters if fans demand them.

Local readers and booksellers have taken notice. Copies of the first two volumes fly off shelves at independent retailers and online platforms, and Dove’s social media channels buzz with excitement for the third installment. One early reader described the experience as “spellbinding magic that uplifts spirits and captivates hearts,” while another praised how the books “bridge the gap between youth and wisdom.”

For Dove, the series is more than entertainment—it is a message of hope wrapped in adventure. “Whatever you are going through, however unfair life seems to be, you can overcome,” he says. “Keep an open mind about things you don’t understand… Life is all about experiences and making memories.”

As summer approaches and Fall of Toganak nears release, fans of epic fantasy have every reason to mark their calendars. Whether you are a longtime devotee of mythical quests or a newcomer seeking a story that stirs both the imagination and the soul, R.W. Dove’s “Gods and Guardians” delivers an unforgettable ride. In Arthur’s world—and perhaps in our own—the line between ordinary and extraordinary is thinner than it seems. All it takes is the courage to step forward and embrace the journey.

Books in the series are available now on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other major retailers. For signing events or appearances, contact R.W. Dove via his website at rwdove.com or follow him on social media.
