June is only a week old, but New York has already had plenty to celebrate this month. Still, Sunday belongs to Broadway, and some of the biggest stars of American theater were on hand at Radio City Music Hall for the 79th Tony Awards.
The event, which, unusually, tapped a pop star to host the proceedings, doesn’t typically have the same density of high-end designer dresses and haute couture as the Academy Awards or the Met Gala. But these are showbiz folk, and it would be a mistake to expect anything less than spectacle from the people who reimagined “Cats” as a voguing ball and gave Frank-N-Furter a chain saw.
