Sans Air Purifier Review

Sans Air Purifier Review

Verdict

The Sans Air Purifier is compact and portable, and punches above its weight. For such a small machine, it has a HEPA 13 filter, along with a carbon filter, and a pre-filter, and they combine to do an excellent job of removing pollutants. The quiet air purifier has easy-to-view touch controls, and a minimalist design that comes in four color choices. However, the Sans Air Purifier is expensive, and the filter needs to be replaced more frequently than on most air purifiers.

  • Excellent CADR

  • HEPA 13 and activated carbon filter

  • Compact design

  • Carry handle

  • Expensive

  • Frequent filter replacement

  • No remote control or app

Key Features

  • Excellent filtration

The professional grade HEPA 13 filter and a pound of activated carbon combine to clear the air of odors, chemicals, gases, and VOCs, while the pre-filter captures larger particles like dust and pet hair.

  • Lightweight and portable

No one wants to pick up a pollution-filled machine. However, the Sans Air Purifier has a handle on the top, so you never actually touch the machine.

Introduction

There are a lot of air purifiers, and new machines are introduced at a staggering rate. Some are copy-cat designs, and many are less than impressive. However, the Sans Air Purifier stands out for several reasons.

Its three-stage filtration process includes a medical-grade HEPA 13 filter, along with an activated carbon filter, and a pre-filter (plus a UVC light) to quickly and quietly remove allergens and pollution. The air purifier can cover up to 1,854 square feet, making it a particularly good choice for large areas.

But does it deserve a place on our list of the best air purifiers? Keep reading to find out.

Design and features

  • Sleek, compact design
  • Easy to transport
  • User-friendly controls

The Sans Air Purifier arrived well-packaged in a cardboard box. I was immediately impressed at the minimalist design. I tested the sand color, but the air purifier is available in three additional colors: white, midnight, and agave.

As a general rule, I don’t move air purifiers from room to room unless I’m testing them. But when I need to move them, transportation is always rather iffy. Some of the heavier air purifiers have wheels or a built-in handle – like the IQAir Atem Earth Air Purifier – to help lift it up off the floor. However, many lightweight air purifiers don’t have any type of handle – including my beloved BlueAir Blue Signature Air Purifier and Dyson Hushjet Purifier Compact, so I’m basically cradling the machine (which may have dust and debris on the outside) in my arms, which is not an ideal situation.

The handle on the top of the Sans Air Purifier is one of my favorite features, because it allowed me to avoid making contact with the machine. The handle is also foldable, so it’s out of the way when not needed. At 11 pounds, the air purifier is also lightweight enough that I didn’t mind moving it from one room to the other. While I kept it on the floor, the Sans Air Purifier can certainly fit on a night stand or other tabletop as well.

The filter is located on the back side of the air purifier. It’s easy to remove: simply open the back panel and then pull the filter out.

The control panel is easy to understand and use. The top row includes the SmartPure display, which provides a numerical air quality reading. The bottom row includes controls for the following functions: power, mode/fan speed, sensor mode, timer, light/child lock.

On the bottom row is the UV Light and Filter Replacement Alert, which will flash red when the filter needs to be replaced.

There’s also a tri-color ring around the control panel, which provides a color-coded air quality indicator: blue for good, yellow for moderate, and red for poor.

Performance

  • Filtration system is highly effective
  • Operates quietly
  • No remote control or app options

My first test of the Sans Air Purifier came quite unexpectedly. I was in the living room, and heard a noise coming from the master bedroom. I went to investigate, and the Sans Air Purifier, which was in auto mode, had kicked into gear in response to my neighbor’s tobacco smoke. The air quality indicator was red, and the air purifier was working furiously to remove the polluted air. In less than 10 minutes, the fan speed returned to normal, and the bedroom had a pleasant, clean smell.

This was the result of several factors. The Sans Air Purifier uses SmartPure Technology, which is designed to sense the air quality at any given moment and then adjust as needed. Also, the HEPA 13 medical grade filter pulled the smoke from the air and trapped it. In addition, the activated carbon filter neutralized the chemicals and odors from the tobacco. While many air purifiers have an activated carbon filter, an entire pound of it is going to make a significant difference in performance.

The Sans Air Purifier also has a pre-filter, which traps dust, and other larger particles.

Time and time again, I was impressed with the air purifier’s ability to detect pollutants before I was even aware of them, and then quickly adjust to clean the air. The air purifier has a CADR (clean air delivery rate) of 420 m³/hr, which is much higher than average.

The cleaning process works so well that perhaps this is why Sans says the filter needs to be replaced every three months (I haven’t reached the 3-month point yet, so I haven’t needed to change it). However, at $39 per filter, the $160 yearly cost could be cost-prohibitive to many consumers.

In auto mode, the air purifier is also quiet enough that I wouldn’t know that it’s on except for the light displayed on the top of the machine. The air purifier is also quiet on the low fan setting, but discernible on the medium setting, and as I stated before, I can hear it from a good distance away on high mode. The noise range is 30 to 52 dB.

According to Sans, the internal UV-C light, which is ozone-free, protects against pathogens, but I can neither verify nor refute that claim.

Should you buy it?

If you have the budget to purchase a $400 air purifier and an additional $160 to spend on filters each year, this is an excellent choice.

You want a smart air purifier

The Sans Air Purifier is a simple machine. It uses SmartPure Technology; however, it doesn’t connect to an app, and you can’t integrate voice assistants.

Final Thoughts

I’ve tested lots of air purifiers and the Sans Air Purifier has quickly become one of my favorites. The compact and lightweight design, along with the convenient handle, make it easy to transport. The HEPA 13 filter and a pound of carbon work together to stop pollutants from irritating my eyes and nose. Admittedly, the air purifier is quite expensive, and purchasing a new filter every quarter will increase operating costs significantly.

How We Test

We test every air purifier we review thoroughly over an extended period of time. We use industry standard tests to compare features properly. We’ll always tell you what we find. We never, ever, accept money to review a product.

Find out more about how we test in our ethics policy.

  • Used as our main air purifier for the review period
  • We test smart purifiers with their apps and we test Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant compatibility
  • We time how long it takes each purifier to remove smoke from a closed room

FAQs

Does the Sans Air Purifier measure PM1?

No, it measures PM 2.5, PM10, and VOCs, but not PM1.

When I switch between measuring PM 2.5, PM10, or VOCs, does this mean the air purifier is only filtering the selected pollutant?

No, the air purifier only displays one pollutant at a time, but it’s detecting and filtering all of them.
