Panasonic Mini Bread & Ice Cream Maker SD-PMC100 Review
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Panasonic Mini Bread & Ice Cream Maker SD-PMC100 manages to be both compact and double-duty – perfect for occasional bakers and whipping up frozen treats.

While at first glance the Panasonic Mini Bread & Ice Cream Maker is an odd combination of appliances, for some households, it makes a lot of sense. The versatility means you can have homemade foods – ice cream, sorbet, mochi dough, jam, cake, gluten-free treats, as well as a simple loaf of bread – without committing to a bigger machine. As you’d hope, in testing it handled its tasks without a hiccup, although sometimes getting kit in and out without making a mess was a challenge. Perhaps the only area where it could come unstuck is capacity: it’s a bit too mini for batch cooks, big families, or those who require more than a compact loaf of bread.

  • Auto yeast and ingredient dispensers

  • 34 programmes

  • Space-saving design

  • Limited capacity

  • Pricey

  • Accessories need storage

Key Features

Introduction

If you’ve ever considered a bread maker but wished it could do more and take up less room, the Panasonic Mini Bread & Ice Cream Maker could be the answer.

It’s compact on the worktop but comes with a vast 34 programmes and an array of accessories, so while this appliance might be mini, its offering is anything but. Pop in the bread pan and paddle and it’ll make anything from a basic white loaf to gluten-free goodies; swap the paddle for the mochi blade and it’ll mix up a batch of soft rice dough.

Alternatively, insert the pre-frozen ice cream container and it’ll churn frozen yogurt, ice cream or fruity sorbet in around 25 minutes.

Design and features

  • Makes desserts and cakes
  • Rapid mode
  • 13-hour delay timer

Not having space for a bread machine is a common barrier to buying one, so for compact kitchens or those with limited workspace, the Panasonic Mini Bread & Ice Cream Maker is a breath of fresh air. It’s short enough to tuck below wall cabinetry, and has a handle so it’s easy to move around. Unsurprisingly, this limits its capacity: the largest loaf you can make is 500g, while only 350-400ml of ice cream can be frozen from around 300ml of liquid ingredients.

Where it doesn’t come up short is the range of programmes. There are 34 in total, including 12 for desserts, covering everything from cake and jam to pasta and pizza dough, gluten-free options and frozen treats. Plus, a 13-hour delay timer means you can wake up to freshly baked bread.

It also draws on its bigger sibling, Panasonic’s best-selling SD-YR2550, with an automatic yeast dispenser and one for raisins and nuts. There’s even a blade to make mochi rice dough – although little in the way of guidance once you’ve made it. Instead, a QR code directs you to a full manual online or you can find recipes on the Panasonic Kitchen+ app.

As well as the bread pan, measuring cup and lid and measuring spoon, it includes an ice cream container and stirring blade, though there’s no storage for these accessories. Plus, there’s a little planning that needs to go into ice cream making: the container has to be pre-frozen for at least eight hours, but not more than 48 hours, so you can’t simply leave it in the freezer all the time.

If just one container is limiting, you can buy extras.

No parts of the Panasonic Mini Bread & Ice Cream Maker are dishwasher safe, but they’re all easy to wash by hand. A final reason to buy is a choice of colour: it’s available in either black with rose gold accents (SD-PMC100) or purely black (SD-PMC101).

Performance

  • Well-risen white bread
  • Excellent wholemeal loaf
  • Mixed consistency ice cream

Making ice cream in what resembles a bread machine is an unusual experience. On the plus side, the ice cream container that needs pre-freezing is fairly small. My freezer only has drawers, which in the past have struggled to accommodate ice cream maker bowls, but the container for the Panasonic Mini Bread & Ice Cream Maker fitted easily. Both the bucket bottom and stirring blade detach for freezing, before being reattached, inserted into the machine and set on the ice cream programme.

I decided to make strawberry ice cream according to the provided recipe.

I found it tricky to pour in the mixture while the container was in the machine and the blade was turning – a steady hand is required.

The ice cream programme ran for 25 minutes: as the mixture thickened, the paddle started to squeak but otherwise it was quiet and stable on the worktop with no wobbling.

The finished ice cream was more frozen and firmer around the sides of the bowl and the base. I found it hard to remove this fairly solid ice cream: it’s a shame that there’s no small spatula supplied for scraping out as most of mine were too big for the container.

The ice cream was fluffier and more scoopable around the blade. Overall, I found the small container quite hard to hold while I was scraping the ice cream out: a handle would have been useful.

Next, I made a basic white loaf on one of its longest programmes – 4 hours – with the recommended recipe.

While the loaf emerged golden brown and well risen, the paddle became stuck in the bread.

Unlike some bread makers, there’s no hook provided for retrieving the paddle, so the base of the loaf tore slightly. The bread had a firm, crisp crust, although it was a little softer on top.

Compared to loaves from my own bread maker – a Panasonic SD-ZB2502BXC – it felt especially small.

While there’s a wholemeal programme, I decided that the ‘seed bread’ programme would be more suitable for making a wholemeal loaf with added ingredients using white, wholemeal and rye flour.

I substituted linseed for the suggested black sesame seeds and put cashews instead of walnuts in the dispenser.

This loaf came out of the pan easily without bringing the paddle with it.

It had a good thick crust, and rose beautifully. The nuts were browned but not burnt, although I noted that the top of the loaf was again slightly soft.

Should you buy it?

You’re torn between buying a bread maker or an ice cream maker

This clever machine combines both without too many compromises.

You’re looking to replace a full-sized bread maker or you have a large household to cater for

The capacity of the Panasonic Mini Bread & Ice Cream Maker will be limiting.

Final Thoughts

In offering two distinct functions in one compact appliance, mixing/baking and churning, the Panasonic Mini Bread & Ice Cream Maker isn’t a bread machine for the regular baker. Instead, it feels more suitable for those who want to be able to whip up several homemade foods, with the option of bread into the bargain. In some ways, it’s more seasonal than most: ice cream in the warmer months, jam making when fruit is in abundance, and comforting cake and bread recipes for the cooler weather. As an all-rounder, it excels, but if you miss the capacity of a bigger bread maker, you may find one of the brand’s larger models more suitable. Either way, check out our tips for getting the most from a bread maker.

How We Test

Unlike other sites, we test every bread maker we review thoroughly over an extended period of time. We use standard tests to compare features properly. We’ll always tell you what we find. We never, ever, accept money to review a product.
Find out more about how we test in our ethics policy.

  • Used as our main bread maker for the review period
  • We make a basic white loaf and a wholemeal loaf to check for consistent mixing, a good dough rise and well-risen bread overall.
