DJI Power 1000 Mini Review

DJI Power 1000 Mini Review

Verdict

A very small and well-priced power station, the DJI Power 1000 Mini is perfect for camping trips. With its 1kWh capacity, there’s plenty of battery power on tap, and its AC outlets handle most typical devices you’d want when out and about. Its efficiency is more mid-level and the proprietary DC input/output a bit limiting, but they’re fair tradeoffs for this station’s compact size.

Introduction

More power on the move has typically meant bulkier, heavier power stations, but the DJI Power 1000 Mini does better: it packs a 1kWh battery into a device that’s only slightly bigger than a 500Wh unit from a few years ago.

There are some trade-offs in terms of ports and maximum power output, but if you want something generally small and long-lasting for camping trips, this could well be for you.

Design and features

  • Very small
  • Integrated USB-C charging cable
  • 800W output, 1008Wh capacity

A little bigger than the Bluetti AC50B, the DJI Power 1000 Mini packs in double the battery, with 1008Wh capacity on tap. That’s impressive in such a small device, although the one thing DJI can’t shrink is the weight: at 11.5kg, it feels heavier than it looks, although it’s still light enough to carry easily through a campsite using the handle on top.

DJI has fitted all of the ports to the front of the device. For AC devices, there are two standard UK power sockets, properly aligned so that plugging in a bulky adaptor into one won’t block the other.

The restriction is that the sockets are only capable of a sustained 800W output (1000W max), so you’re slightly more limited on which devices you can plug in. However, for the typical kinds of things you might need on a camping trip, such as a pump or lamp, you’re well covered.

Dual USB-A (12W Max) and a USB-C port (100W) should cover you for most of your charging requirements.

I like the integrated USB-C cable above, which gives you extra charging capacity and is handy if you often forget to bring the cables that you need.

There’s a single DC input/output. This uses DJI’s own cables, so the lack of a regular 12V car-style port might be felt if you’ve got devices like a portable fridge.

A display shows the current input and output power, battery life as a percentage and the run time remaining in minutes.

There’s also an integrated torch, which is handy if you’re in a tent and want to see what you’re doing.

Via the app, you can monitor the power station and toggle the inputs on and off.

Charging

  • Can charge within an hour
  • Up to 400W of solar input

For the most part, you’re likely to charge the DJI Power 1000 Mini via its IEC AC input, which can charge at a maximum of 1000W (just over an hour to full), although you can lower this to 500W if you’re on a more limited supply.

Overall, there’s not much difference in efficiency, and I found the charge cycle to be 88.9% efficient, with 1134Wh of power required to fill the battery.

Alternatively, using the DC socket, you can hook up to 400W of solar panels, which should see the power station fully charge within three hours, depending on sunlight.

Performance

  • Best under mid loads
  • Decent efficiency

Although the AC slots are rated at 1000W max, I had no trouble running a 1000W heater until the battery was flat, although the resulting 79.56% efficiency was a little below par.

Retesting under a 500W load, the DJI Power 1000 Mini did better, with 85.22% efficiency on the discharge, which is more what I’d expect from a power station.

DC load using the USB ports was better, with the DJI Power 1000 Mini able to output 933Wh of power, for an efficiency of 91.26%.

Overall, round-trip AC efficiency (input power used divided by the best output) was a little low at 75.7%. That’s not terrible, but it is a trade-off for such a compact device.

Supporting up to 4000 charge cycles until the battery hits 80%, I calculated that the DJI Power 1000 Mini will cost 12p per kWh for stored power over that lifetime. That makes it one of the cheapest power stations.

Should you buy it?

You want a small power station

Compact and cheap, this power station has a relatively high capacity and can handle most devices you’d need on the move.

You want expansion or more efficiency

If you want a power station that you can add additional batteries to, or one that can handle higher power outputs, look elsewhere.

Final Thoughts

With no expansion options, a maximum 1000W output, proprietary DC input/output, and mid-level efficiency, the DJI Power 1000 Mini isn’t going to compete on stats alone against larger power stations. But, a power station is about more than this, and this power station is powerful enough for most typical jobs when camping, it’s exceptionally compact and it’s cheap.

If you need something small for camping, then it’s a great buy; if you want something with more capacity and output power, read my guide to the best power stations.

How We Test

We test every power station we review thoroughly over an extended period of time. We use standard tests to compare features properly. We’ll always tell you what we find. We never, ever, accept money to review a product.

Find out more about how we test in our ethics policy.

  • We test with a variety of devices to see how long the battery will last.
  • We test different charging methods to see how quickly the battery can be topped up.
