Caso PizzaChef 430°C Pizza Oven Review

Verdict

The Caso PizzaChef 430°C is a thoughtfully designed indoor pizza oven that offers genuine high-temperature cooking, versatile presets and the convenience of electric operation. It produced very good pizzas during testing, but the unresponsive touchscreen holds it back a little.

  • Suitable for year-round indoor use

  • No need to rotate pizzas during cooking

  • Capable of making excellent pizza

  • Well built

  • Touchscreen was occasionally unresponsive

  • Temperature accuracy was inconsistent on the first test

  • Bulky

Key Features

Introduction

If you want to make pizza year-round, but the price of high-temperature indoor ovens has been putting you off, the Caso PizzaChef 430°C Pizza Oven may just catch your eye. Available at a friendlier price than its big-name rivals, it promises a maximum temperature of 430°C for perfect pizza.

To put it through its paces, I made a batch of Neapolitan pizzas using my usual 65% hydration dough, which I find provides the ideal balance between stretchability and texture. Can it compete with wood-fired or propane models, or even other electric ovens? Read on to find out.

Design and features

  • Well built
  • Wide range of pre-set modes
  • Handles pizzas up to 12 inches

The Ooni Volt is probably the best-known indoor pizza oven. It’s a chunky, well-made bit of kit, capable of reaching the high temperatures that pizzas require, but it’s expensive. At half the price, the Caso PizzaChef 430°C promises similar performance and my first impressions were good.

The oven arrives well packaged and includes a pizza peel, so you can get started straight away without buying any accessories.

While much cheaper than the Ooni Volt, the Caso PizzaChef 430°C feels well built, with premium construction that inspires confidence from the moment you take it out of the box. Setup couldn’t be simpler: plug it in, and you’re ready to cook, without the hassle of propane bottles or outdoor gas connections. And because it’s electric, you can use it indoors year-round, or even take it outside in nicer weather, as long as you’ve got a power socket nearby.

Although it’s a countertop oven, the PizzaChef is quite large at 295 × 460 × 495 mm. It fits on a kitchen counter, but you’ll need a big cupboard for storage if you don’t want to leave the oven permanently out.

The upside of that size is a 32 x 32cm pizza stone, which comfortably fits pizzas up to 12 inches.

The oven is rated at 2200W, and Caso claims it can reach 430°C in just 20 minutes. Of course, you can cook at lower temperatures for different pizza styles. To help, the touchscreen offers several preset choices: DIY (with full control over settings), frozen, pinsa Romano, New York, pizza Romano, tarte flambée, Neapolitan and pizza rolls.

With a mode set, you can then tweak the temperature, and toggle the heating elements on or off, going for bottom heat, top heat or both. These heating controls are useful but don’t give as fine control as the balance option on the Ooni Volt.

As someone who primarily makes Neapolitan pizza, I was especially interested in the dedicated Neapolitan setting, which sets the oven to 430°C – the ideal temperature for this style. As my benchmark, I compared the Caso PizzaChef 430°C against my own propane-fired Ooni oven, which consistently reaches these temperatures.

Performance

  • Heats fast
  • At the right temperature, pizza is excellent
  • Touchscreen slightly unresponsive

Unfortunately, my first experience wasn’t entirely smooth. I found the touchscreen to be quite unresponsive and it required several presses before the oven eventually switched on. After selecting the Neapolitan preset, the oven indicated it had reached the target temperature after around 20 minutes.

To verify this, I checked the pizza stone with an infrared thermometer and was surprised to find it had reached only about 269°C at first, eventually hitting around 280°C – well below the advertised 430°C.

According to the instruction manual, a Neapolitan pizza should cook in around two minutes using this setting. At only 280°C, this simply wasn’t achievable. Although I still produced a good pizza, the cooking time was much longer than expected.

To rule out user error, I switched the oven off and repeated the test. Once again, I had trouble with the touchscreen and needed several attempts before I could select the Neapolitan programme. However, this time the results were much better.

After the usual preheating period, the oven reached around 400°C, much closer to the advertised temperature. Trying the oven again multiple times, I got the same result. It seems the oven may need a few uses before it heats up properly.

One positive aspect of the electric design is that, unlike many gas-fired ovens, there is no exposed flame. This means the pizza doesn’t require constant turning during cooking: simply place it inside and allow it to bake evenly, making the overall cooking experience much more relaxed.

At this higher temperature, the oven produced a much more authentic Neapolitan-style pizza with improved oven spring, better leoparding on the crust and a noticeably shorter cooking time. This demonstrated the oven’s potential when operating correctly.

Should you buy it?

You want a simple pizza oven for year-round use

Capable of high temperatures, this oven can make brilliant pizza no matter what the weather.

If you want more control over the temperature balance or more responsive controls, look elsewhere.

Final Thoughts

The Caso PizzaChef 430°C has a lot going for it. It’s well-built, simple to use, versatile, and offers the convenience of genuine high-temperature pizza cooking indoors without the need for propane gas.

When it hits its highest temperatures, the Caso PizzaChef 430°C Pizza Oven produces very good pizzas, and the lack of a live flame means there is no need to constantly rotate the pizza, making the cooking process more relaxed and beginner-friendly. The range of preset programmes and manual mode also make it suitable for much more than just pizza, adding to its overall versatility.

However, the inconsistent touchscreen responsiveness and temperature accuracy I experienced during testing prevented it from delivering a consistently premium experience.

For anyone looking for a convenient indoor pizza oven, the Caso PizzaChef 430°C is certainly worth considering. It offers excellent build quality and plenty of useful features, but more consistent results and a better interface would help.
