2025 DGA Nominations Announced: ‘Emilia Pérez’ and ‘The Brutalist’ In, ‘Wicked’ Out
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Nominations for the Directors Guild of America’s feature-film award were announced on Wednesday, and though “Wicked” led the Screen Actors Guild nominations announced just hours before, that film’s director, Jon M. Chu, was nowhere to be found on this lineup.

The five directors nominated for the top DGA Award were Jacques Audiard (“Emilia Pérez”), Sean Baker (“Anora”), Edward Berger (“Conclave”), Brady Corbet (“The Brutalist”) and James Mangold (“A Complete Unknown”).

Four of the five DGA nominees typically go on to receive an Oscar nomination for best director, though last year, only three made the cut: The DGA nominees Greta Gerwig (“Barbie”) and Alexander Payne (“The Holdovers”) were supplanted at the Oscars by Justine Triet (“Anatomy of a Fall”) and Jonathan Glazer (“The Zone of Interest”). That’s indicative of the biggest split between the guild and the academy: Though the DGA tends to favor big-studio filmmakers, the directors branch of the academy increasingly leans toward more international picks.

With that in mind, contenders like the French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat (“The Substance”) shouldn’t be counted out for an Oscar nomination. But it’s a bad sign for Chu and the “Dune: Part Two” director Denis Villeneuve: If their own guild wasn’t willing to nominate their blockbuster work, the more highbrow academy voters aren’t likely to prove more amenable.

Here is a rundown of the nominees in the major film and television categories. For the complete list, including reality shows and children’s programming, go to dga.org. The winners will be announced Feb. 8.
