I’m the director of “The Devil Wears Prada 2.” In this scene, Andy Sachs, played by Annie Hathaway, is sitting in on her first Runway staff meeting chaired by Miranda Priestly, played, of course, by Meryl Streep. “…I was.” “So the intention was dull and listless.” “I wouldn’t say that was the goal.” This is the first of three conference room scenes in the new movie. All of these views of New York are actually created by visual effects. This scene was shot on a very large set on our stages in Queens. Two important things are happening in this scene. One, we’re seeing that Andy still desperately craves Miranda’s approval, and the second is that Miranda’s treatment of her staff has been changed over the years. She now has an assistant, Amari, played by Simone Ashley, who keeps her from violating various H.R. rules. “…you choose a hiking shoe and a bum bag.” “A bum bag! May my suicide be brief and painless.” [Clears throat] “No, no.” “What? What do you mean, no, no? I am not talking about killing other people. Yet.” Some of the other actors who speak in this scene are Bria Condon. And at the end of the table is George C. Wolfe, who appeared in the first movie. He’s an illustrious stage and screen director. Andy finally interrupts the meeting and Miranda criticizes her. “Right. But did anyone read the piece? I don’t know. Nigel, how are the metrics on that one?” “Mm mm.” “Mm mm?” “See, you are here to write and edit features that people read. And when that happens, yes, you may interrupt a meeting…” Here at the end of the scene, we were looking for some kind of button and Meryl ad libbed this moment. “Let’s talk about rodeo bow ties. This one’s cute.”
