SweetDreamers Luna Dream Machine Review

Verdict

Luna does almost everything Ewan Deluxe does, but in a smaller, travel-friendly package. It offers the same ten sounds, the same cry sensor, but the exposed speaker means sound quality takes a noticeable step down. If portability is your priority, that’s a fair trade. If not, Luna’s accomplished sibling remains the better all-rounder.

  • Easy to use thanks to design and button layout

  • Child lock switch prevents accidental misclicks

  • Cry Sensor is particularly useful in the car

  • Sound quality and volume isn’t as good as the Ewan

Key Features

  • Review Price:
    £28.99

  • 10 sounds

Lots of white, pink, and nature profiles to pick from, all enhanced with heartbeat sounds

  • Portable

The Luna Dream machine is designed with portability in mind, making it easy to attach to things like prams, car seats, and more

  • Automatic cry sensor

Automatically plays soothing sounds if it detects your baby crying

Introduction

Before you can even leave the house with a baby, there’s so much to think about in terms of what they need for the day – and how much you can fit inside your changing bag. And if your little one is used to being soothed by the sweet, sweet sounds of white or pink noise, bringing a bulky white noise machine along is probably not at the top of your list.

But that’s where the Luna Dream Machine comes in. Produced by SweetDreamers, the creators behind Ewan the Sheep, this handy little noise machine is designed to soothe your child on the go, wherever you are. It’s small, portable, and comes with premium features like a cry sensor.

But can it live up to some of the bigger, more well-known white noise machines on the market? We put it to the test.

Design and features

  • Very small
  • Ten sounds
  • Cry sensor

The Luna Dream Machine is the smallest white noise machine we’ve ever tested. Measuring at just 6x6cm, it’s clear that SweetDreamers has designed this with portability in mind. Instead of the controller being hidden behind a soft plushie, the speaker sits at the bottom of a long hanger.

This hanger measures 8cm in length, which is smaller than both the Ewan Deluxe and the SnuzCloud. It’s easy to attach to prams, car seat handles, cot sides, and Moses baskets. I even attached it to our changing bag one day when my partner was using the sling, tucking it inside the bag when it wasn’t in use.

And because the Luna is designed to be used on the go, using the machine is really straight forward. All the buttons are on the back of the speaker; the power button sits in the middle, surrounded by the volume controls, and the sound, playback, and cry sensor buttons. There’s no need to read the manual before using this machine – it really is self explanatory thanks to the status indicator lights, which sit below the buttons. You’ve got one to show if the cry sensor is active, one for the battery, and then three other lights, which show what playback setting you’ve got the machine on, and then underneath that, the child lock switch.

Like Ewan, the Luna offers 20-, 40-, and 80-minute playback options, plus continuous playback. You can use these with the cry sensor, which detects when your baby is crying. I’ve found this generally works at up to two metres, but the range is reduced in busy environments like cafes, supermarkets, and more. And like the Ewan, the last sound and volume used are the ones used to soothe your baby.

You have plenty of sounds to choose from, too- ten, in fact. If you are familiar with Ewan, you’ll already know them, but the Luna includes womb, birds, waves, harp, shush, rain, hairdryer, vacuum cleaner, fan, and car noises, each with a heartbeat layered over it.

The sound is pretty good, but due to the Luna having its speaker exposed, I don’t think the quality is as good as plushy-based noise machines. We’ll talk about this in more detail below, but I found some of the sounds, like shush and wave, were a bit harsher sounding than Ewan but not bad enough to stir the baby.

Sound quality

  • Loud enough to be heard when out and about
  • Not too loud as to disturn others

As the Luna is designed to be used on the go, I amended the test conditions somewhat, replacing the Moses basket with a pram, but keeping the distances consistent with the other reviews to make comparisons easier.

Below you can find the decibel ratings taken from next to the pram (~30cm), ~100cm from it, and then and ~200cm from it. Here’s what we found:

30cm min volume 30cm max volume 100cm min volume 100cm max volume 200cm min volume 200cm max volume
43 dB 63 dB 38 dB 58 dB 35 dB 55 dB

Unsurprisingly, the Luna is directly comparable with the Ewan Deluxe, deliver similar decibel averages at close range. The device isn’t as loud as the others that I’ve tested, but given Luna’s ideal use case, that doesn’t really matter: it’s loud enough for your baby to hear in busy environments and quiet enough that it won’t disturb others when you’re out and about.

As I mentioned earlier, the sound quality is pretty good, although some of the profiles can sound a little harsh due to the lack of padding over the speaker. I wouldn’t say this is as bad as say the Groov-e Serenity, which we’ve also tested, but it’s definitely more noticeable if you’re used to listening to say the womb or rain settings.

There’s also no noticeable audio loops for some of the more active noises, something that’s helped by the fact there’s always a heartbeat layered on top.

All in all, this is an impressive speaker for such a small device and one that’s more than equipped to help your baby fall back asleep when you need a helping hand.

Safety

The Luna Dream Machine is equipped for safe sleep protocols, thanks to the hanger it is attached to. It’s made out of silicone, so it’s quite flexible. The only thing I’d say is that if you detach and reattach it to different things regularly, keep an eye on the fastening loop to make sure it isn’t deteriorating.

I’ve not noticed any real wear and tear during my testing period, but it’s something I would look for if I was buying one second hand, for example.

Battery life

SweetDreamers say the Luna Dream Machine can last up to 50 hours due to its 1100mAh battery, but over my two testing periods, I got between 65 and 75 hours of continuous playback with the Cry Sensor off.

I’ve been quite impressed with the overall battery life and not having to think about charging it is one less thing to worry about as a new parent. And even then, charging is quick via USB-C, you don’t need to wait long if you get stuck in a pinch.

Should you buy it?

You want something small to take everywhere

Small size, good battery life and a wide-range of sounds makes this a good choice for parents on the move.

You want more features or better sound quality

Buy a bigger machine and you can get better audio quality, plus extra features, such as a night light.

Final Thoughts

The Luna is a dream machine for soothing little ones on the go. It’s easy to transport, it hooks onto buggies and car seats easily, and has a variety of noises to choose from. The cry sensor is handy, especially when out and about or in the car, but its effectiveness is reduced by external noise.

I can see the benefits of owning both Ewan and Luna to keep sleep cues consistent, although that’s an expensive combination. If I had to pick one, I’d opt for Ewan Deluxe as he comes with the same features, plus lighting, and he can still be taken on the move.

If used in isolation, the Luna is still an excellent white and pink noise machine for babies and the only thing that lets it down, really, is its sound quality.

How We Test

We test every white noise machine thoroughly in the appropriate setting. We check how loud the machine is, its sound quality, and safety – especially if it’s marketed for babies – and its battery life. We will always tell you what we find and we never, ever accept money to review a product.

  • Used for over a week in a nursery setting
  • Thorough testing and checking safety compliance

FAQs

Is the Luna Dream Machine the same as Ewan the Dream Sheep?

No, they’re made by the same company and share the same sound profiles but they’re very different products. The Luna is built with portability in mind and doesn’t have any lighting options.

Does the Luna Dream Machine have a cry sensor?

Yes, like the Ewan Deluxe, the Luna has a cry sensor, although the detection range is limited in busy environments.
