State College, P.A. – Strategies for Justice, a public-benefit organization dedicated to promoting equity and inclusion in law enforcement communities, has announced the recipient of the Moses P. Cobb Breaking Barriers Award. This prestigious award is given to an individual, law enforcement (active or retired) or civilian, who has worked to eliminate barriers within the law enforcement community to foster equity and inclusion.

This year’s recipient is Ronald Hampton, the former Executive Director of the National Black Police Association and a retired twenty-three-year veteran of the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department. Mr. Hampton is known for his outstanding community work with the citizens of the Third Police District in Washington, D.C., in crime prevention, participation, and relations. He has an effective working relationship with law enforcement and the community he serves and has represented honesty and transparency in his work.

In addition to his community work, Mr. Hampton has been involved in designing and delivering community policing and problem-solving training for residents in public housing, as well as overseeing a project dealing with intervention and crime prevention through alternative community sentencing. He has worked with the U.S. Department of Justice, the American University’s Washington Semester School Criminal Justice Program, and Amnesty International USA on various criminal justice and human rights issues.

“On behalf of the SFJ community, it’s been an honor and privilege to meet and work with Mr. Hampton,” says SFJ Board Adviser Joann Dornich. “He demonstrates such a high level of commitment and passion in his own and other communities for which he has made significant contributions.”

Mr. Hampton has served as a consultant-educator to the Presidential Carter Center of Emory University Human Rights Program, which has led to work in Ethiopia, Guyana, Britain, Canada, and the Bahamas. 1996 he led a People-to-People Delegation of Law Enforcement members to South Africa.

Mr. Hampton is a family support worker for the Georgia Avenue Family Support Collaborative, working in schools with families and students. He is also convening a group of individuals interested in the total re-imagining of public safety and law enforcement under the Institute of the Black World’s Police Justice and Accountability Task Force.

“I have known Ron Hampton for 25 years,” says Sonya Pruitt, Founder of the Black Police Experience, Professor of Criminal Justice, and retired Captain of the Montgomery County Police Department, MD, who has worked in collaboration with Mr. Hampton on issues concerning Black police officers and social justice for the Black community. “Ron is a man of commitment who works tirelessly on behalf of disadvantaged communities. I will forever be thankful for his mentorship and appreciate his authenticity. Congratulations!”

The Moses P. Cobb Breaking Barriers Award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of individuals like Ronald Hampton, who strive to promote equity and inclusion in law enforcement communities. Strategies for justice congratulates Mr. Hampton on this well-deserved recognition.
