An album, a new song and a medical diagnosis — the singer Halsey took to social media on Tuesday to announce them all.
On Instagram, in a post featuring a series of videos that appear to document Halsey receiving infusions, Halsey wrote: “long story short, i’m Lucky to be alive.” The post continued: “short story long, i wrote an album. it begins with The End. out now.”
In the first of the videos, Halsey, 29, who uses she/they pronouns, sits on a couch while rubbing their legs in apparent pain.
“I feel like an old lady,” they said, adding “I told myself I’m giving myself two more years to be sick.”
While an exact diagnosis of their illness was not immediately clear, the pop star tagged both the Lupus Research Alliance and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in their post. Representatives for Halsey did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Associated Press reported that the singer was making a donation to both organizations.
The singer said on Instagram that they were giving themselves two more years to be sick, and then at 30, “I’m having a rebirth and I’m not gonna be sick and I’m gonna look super hot and have lots of energy and I’m just gonna get to redo my 20s in my 30s.”
Halsey — born Ashley Frangipane — has been open about their health problems in the past.
In a series of Instagram Story videos in 2022, USA TODAY reported, they revealed that they had been diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, Sjogren’s syndrome, mast cell activation syndrome — known as MCAS — and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, known as POTS.
They have also been open about their battle with endometriosis, a chronic condition that affects 10 percent of women and girls, according to the World Health Organization.
Halsey’s new song, “The End,” is the first peek at their next album, a follow-up to their 2021 project “If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power,” which was produced by Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.
In a social media post shared before Tuesday’s announcement, Halsey said they “wanted to share this. It means a lot to me and I love it.”
“Let’s try something different this time and start at ‘The End,’” they said.
