Grammys 2025’s Unforgettable Looks: Jaden Smith, Bianca Censori, Chappell Roan
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The speculation leading up to the 67th Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday pertained not only to who would win trophies but also to how the spectacle would go over as the city was still reeling from two of the deadliest wildfires in California’s history.

Several industry parties were canceled. Other events, including a gala on Saturday night hosted by the record executive Clive Davis, and the Grammys ceremony itself, were adapted to account for the devastation. On the red carpet, music industry stars and other celebrities posed in front of a muted black backdrop featuring a call to donate to relief efforts. Though there were also a number of black ensembles, the fashion, for the most part, was less somber.

Pop stars like Charli XCX and Sabrina Carpenter conjured girlish elegance in pale gowns with feathers and ruffles. Rappers like Cardi B and Doechii flaunted figure-defining dresses and impossibly long nails. Others, like Bianca Censori, shocked viewers with what they didn’t wear: Ms. Censori, who made an appearance at the Grammys with Ye, her husband, had on little more than a sheer nude body stocking beneath her dark fur coat.

Hers is among the following 15 looks from the Grammys red carpet that, for better or worse, will be hard to forget.

Taylor Swift: Most Roxie Hart!

The “Fortnight” singer’s carnelian-red Vivienne Westwood minidress, heeled sandals and jeweled garter had the razzle-dazzle of a certain “Chicago” character (and of Ms. Swift’s favorite lipstick color).

Olivia Rodrigo: Most Refined!

Amid a sea of festooned frocks and faces caked with foundation, the singer stood out for looking simple and sleek in an unembellished vintage Versace dress and minimal makeup.

Jaden Smith: Most Home Alone!

Presumably to prevent his Louis Vuitton tuxedo from blending in with other formal wear, the rapper and actor wore a castle-shaped hat, made by a Transylvanian designer, that covered his head but revealed his face via an opening where the building’s front door would be.

Chappell Roan: Most Painterly!

Printed on the “Good Luck, Babe!” singer’s gown, an archival Jean-Paul Gaultier couture piece, were Edgar Degas’s paintings of ballet dancers, which seemed to also be the inspiration for her doll-like makeup.

Ye and Bianca Censori: Most Uncensored!

As plain as it was, Ye’s outfit of black T-shirt and pants looked a lot less everyday when he was standing on the carpet next to Ms. Censori, his wife, as she stripped out of her coat and into basically nothing.

Sabrina Carpenter: Most Powder Puff!

The “Espresso” singer’s gown — a powder-blue JW Anderson confection with plush rings of feathers at the hips and the hem — conjured the fluffy softness of a makeup puff.

Billie Eilish: Most Lost at Sea!

In a Prada look involving a black smock and a sailor’s cap, the “Birds of a Feather” singer brought to mind a boat captain in mourning.

Troye Sivan: Most Easter Suit!

Visions of spring were hard to ignore upon seeing the singer in a lilac Prada suit and lightweight sheer shirt.

Kim Gordon: Most Pointed!

With her Celine suit, the Sonic Youth singer and bassist wore a pointy and playful accessory: diminutive silvery horns poking out from her short blond waves.

Charli XCX: Most Reformed Brat!

The singer’s corseted Jean-Paul Gaultier gown, with its soft shredded ruffles and dusty blue-gray color, suggested that she might be retiring all the slime green and patent leather she wore during last year’s “brat summer.”

Marla Maples: Most Random!

As noticeable as the rich purple shade of Ms. Maples’s halter gown was, even more notable was her presence at the Grammys so soon after her ex-husband, President Trump, returned to the White House.

Busta Rhymes: Most Relaxed!

A big smile suggested that the rapper felt quite at ease in his white shawl-collar tuxedo jacket styled with a heart-shaped brooch and a long sash.

Gracie Abrams: Most Betrothed!

In a white Chanel dress and gauzy veil, Ms. Abrams offered her take on singer-as-bride, a sartorial motif embraced by Grammy winners like Madonna and Lady Gaga.

Julia Fox: Most Mrs. Clean!

The actress and onetime love interest of Ye, like Ms. Censori, went with a dark coat over a revealing sheer garment. But, unlike Ms. Censori, she wore undergarments — and accessorized her look with yellow dishwashing gloves.

Misty White Sidell and Anthony Rotunno contributed reporting.
