Suman Shekhar’s journey from India to the USA and then to Canada is a remarkable story of perseverance, skill, and leadership. Her success as an IT manager and entrepreneur, coupled with her commitment to mentoring young professionals, makes her an inspiring figure in the IT industry. Suman’s story is an inspiration for millions of individuals who wants to have it all!

Interviewer: Thank you for joining us today, Suman. Can you tell us about your journey from India to becoming a successful entrepreneur in Canada?

Suman: Thank you for having me. My journey has been quite an adventure. I came to the USA from India to pursue my MBA, which was a significant step in my career and personal growth. The moment I stepped foot in my university (Willamette OR campus), it felt like home. In the span of 7 years I have lived in USA, I have completed two masters, worked for many top S&P 500 companies, met love of my life, and got married.

Interviewer: What motivated you to pursue an MBA in the USA?

Suman: I wanted to broaden my horizons and gain international exposure. The USA offered excellent educational opportunities, and I believed an MBA would enhance my business acumen and open new doors.

Interviewer: After your MBA, you worked as an ERP implementation IT manager. How was that experience?

Suman: It was challenging but rewarding. I had to quickly adapt to the American work culture while managing complex ERP projects. This role taught me a lot about leadership, project management, and the intricacies of IT systems in large organizations.

Interviewer: What prompted your move to Canada?

Suman: After several years in the USA, I saw great opportunities in Canada’s growing tech sector. The country’s welcoming attitude towards immigrants and its quality of life also played a significant role in my decision.

Interviewer: Tell us about starting your own IT consulting firm in Ontario.

Suman: Starting my own firm was both exciting and daunting. I leveraged my experience in ERP implementation and project management to offer specialized services to Canadian businesses. It was challenging to establish myself in a new market, but my unique perspective as an immigrant with international experience proved to be an asset.

Interviewer: How do you balance running your business with being a mom?

Suman: I love being a mom, what can I say. It’s definitely a juggling act! I’ve learned to be very efficient with my time and to delegate when necessary. Having a supportive family and a flexible work environment that I’ve created in my own company has been crucial. It’s not always easy, but it’s incredibly rewarding to be both an entrepreneur and a mother.

Interviewer: What advice would you give to other immigrant women looking to start their own businesses or start a career in IT?

Suman: I’d say believe in yourself and your unique experiences. Don’t be afraid to take calculated risks, network extensively, and always be open to learning. Also, find mentors who can guide you through the challenges of entrepreneurship in a new country.

Interviewer: Thank you for sharing your inspiring journey with us, Suman.

Suman: Thank you for having me. I hope my story can inspire others to pursue their dreams, no matter where they come from.
