No need to vacuum before cleaning

  • More densely packed roller:

    84,000 microfibers per cm²

  • Filterless design:

Stores debris and dirty water in the head

Introduction

While powerful in its own right, the new Dyson Clean+Wash Hygiene is seemingly here to show us where all other hard floor cleaners have been going wrong.

It probably says a fair amount about my age that during a recent trip to Berlin to see the unveiling of Dyson’s latest range of products, the one that most caught my eye was a fully featured floor cleaner. Don’t get me wrong, there were plenty of interesting products unveiled, including the very impressive Dyson Spot and Scrub AI robot vacuum, but as an expectant father, I just know that I’m going to need a dedicated floor cleaner in the not-too-distant future.

While there are plenty of great options from the likes of Shark, Gtech and even Dyson itself, all of which have made their way into our round-up of the best hard floor cleaners, the ideal of an all-in-one cleaner that can tackle both wet and dry spills is a tempting proposition, and when paired with the new cleaning system found in the base of the Clean and Wash Hygiene, Dyson might be on to a winner here.

Design

  • Very similar in design to the Dyson Wash G1
  • New multi-colour design

I will say that, despite this being a new product type for Dyson, the Clean and Wash does look almost identical to the existing Dyson Wash G1, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The sleek stem that gives way to a seamless curve near the handle is still here, just like the exposed water tank that lets you know in a pinch how much clean water you have left for the job at hand.

It follows Dyson’s eye for style to the letter, and even though it is similar, it was this design alone that initially attracted my attention to the device, so there’s definitely something to be said about adhering to the ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ philosophy. There is, however, a key change in the colourway to let Dyson aficionados know that this is a different product from the Wash G1.

Instead of that classic Dyson blue that permeates most of the G1, the Clean and Wash goes for a more eclectic look as it brings together a copper stem, a black handle and a purple body, all of which stack on top of the light blue found at the bottom of the device. It’s definitely not as coherent a style as what the G1 provides, but I quite like the eccentricity of it, and you certainly can’t say that it’s a boring design by any means.

Features and performance

  • Cleans up both solids and liquids
  • Retains Dyson’s filter-free design to prevent a build-up of bacteria
  • The microfibre roller is now denser to help with clean up

Even though it has a strikingly similar look to the Wash G1, the Dyson Clean and Wash Hygiene has one key upgrade that makes it stand out, and that’s the ability to pick up debris as well as clean up any liquids that have been spilt.

Having now seen the device in action both in Berlin and once previously at Dyson’s London headquarters, where I had a chance to use it myself, I can confirm that there is some impressive performance at play here.

With the sample debris that Dyson provided, the Clean and Wash was able to scoop everything up in next to no time, leaving the floor sparkling in its wake. If you have a busy schedule and you don’t have the time to vacuum your floors before tackling them with a dedicated wet cleaner, then this appliance could be a game-changer.

Part of the reason why the Clean and Wash is able to do this is thanks to the larger microfibre roller comprised of 84,000 microfibers per cm², which provides a greater capacity to absorb more than previous Dyson cleaners as you move it along.

Just like the Wash G1 before it, the Clean and Wash Hygiene stays true to the last part of its name by doing away with filters that transport dirt and mucky water through the body, instead having a design wherein all of that is collected in the head of the device, which allows it to be emptied and cleaned easily.

Even the microfibre roller is cleaned by fresh water as it moves, so it’s unlikely that you’ll notice any build-up of bacteria or smells unless you really go out of your way not to clean the appliance when needed.

Final Thoughts

While the Dyson Clean and Wash Hygiene is sure to come at a premium (the price has yet to be officially announced), I can see it being worth the expense for anyone who’s sick of having to vacuum their floors every time they want to break out the hard floor cleaner.

From what I’ve seen, it appears as though the Clean and Wash has the strength to tackle a wide variety of messes, but we’ll know exactly how powerful it can be when we get a sample unit in for testing, so stay tuned for our full review in due course.

FAQs
