Verdict
The Dreame AirPursue PM20 Purifier has extremely high CADR (clean air delivery rate) and removed the secondhand smoke coming from my neighbour’s home in less than five minutes. It also quickly removes VOCs and other forms of air pollution. The machine can also cool the air during warmer months and heat the air when it’s cold outside. However, it’s big and bulky, and costs a pretty penny.

Introduction
With its inspiration appearing to come from a certain well-known vacuum and fan company, the Dreame AirPursue PM20 Purifier is a large purifier for big spaces, and it’s a fan and a heater, too.
With the range of features on tap, is this a better alternative or is it too big and bulky to make sense? My full review explains all.

The Dreame AirPursue PM20 arrived well packaged. One interesting note: there was actually an unboxing guide with text and illustrations. I typically use a knife to slit boxes open at the top seam, but Dreame explicitly advised against this method. Instead, the box has buckles (yes, buckles) at the bottom on both sides, and I needed to release the buckles and then slide the box up to reveal the air purifier.
Based on this level of attention to details with the box, I was eager to see if the air purifier itself was equally impressive – and it was. The Dreame AirPursue PM20 looks a lot like the Dyson Purifier Big+Quiet Formaldehyde Air Purifier, similar enough that the casual observer could easily confuse the two. However, the price creates a clear distinction between the two. Dyson’s two models range in price from $1099 to $1199, whereas Dreame’s AirPursue PM20 is $699.
At 39.5 pounds, it’s a big, heavy air purifier, but it’s also quite attractive. I wouldn’t recommend it for small or crowded spaces, since the machine needs enough room to operate effectively. However, if you have the space, there are so many appealing features, including a 10-speed fan. Dyson’s Purifier is not a fan.

There are just two buttons on the air purifier: the power button and the information switch. As a general rule, I tend to prefer using the onboard controls, but I found it tedious to operate them, so I usually controlled the air purifier using the remote – especially when I was in bed.
The remote control lets you access the PM20’s full range of features, including choosing between the four purification levels: Auto, which adjusts airflow speed based on air quality; Pet mode, which enables both the upper and lower air outlets and increases airflow to remove pet odors; Comfort, which reduces airflow to the lowest level, so is good for sleeping; and Custom, which let me manually adjust airflow.
There are then controls for the air flow speed, heating and cooling modes, a timer (up to 12 hours), airflow direction and a button to cycle through the information displays.
When not in use, the remote attaches magnetically to the front of the fan.
Usefully, the air purifier connects to the Dream app, giving all of the same controls but from wherever you are, and you can keep tabs on the purification status.

The Dreame AirPursue PM20 does an excellent job of removing pollutants from the air. I have a smoking neighbor, so the most important test for me is how quickly it can remove that stench and those contaminants from my air. Obviously, a lot depends on what and how long she’s been smoking. However, when I increase the fan speed until it’s between eight and 10, the air purifier cleans the air pretty quickly. When she stops smoking or moves to another part of her home, it takes less than five minutes for the air to return to normal.
I’ve also wheeled the Dreame AirPursue PM20 into the kitchen to see how it performs when I’m testing various kitchen products. I don’t burn food on purpose, but when testing air fryers like the Typhur Sync Air Fryer or the Ninja French Door Premier Air Fryer Toaster Oven, I may need to tweak the suggested cooking times, and the air purifier gently reminds me to attend to the food by shifting into high gear (if it’s in Auto mode).
On some occasions, the colors change for other reasons, for example, when I’m using cleaning sprays. The air purifier has 7 sensors: PM1, PM2.5, PM10, formaldehyde, TVOC (total volatile organic compounds), temperature, and humidity. When I spray cleaning products into the air, this action triggers the TVOC sensor. But again, it takes less than 5 minutes for the Dream AirPursue PM20 to remove these chemicals, and return my air to the desired state.
The air purifier works quickly, in part, because of the four-stage filtration process. The gold magnetic housing keeps hair and large debris from entering the air purifier, so the filter system is more effective. Behind the magnetic housing is the High Efficiency Composite Filter, which provides H13 filtration and tracks dust and other small allergens.
Next is the Carbon Layer, which absorbs smoke and also volatile gasses like TVOC and formaldehyde. Finally, the Formaldehyde-Cata Filter works to remove formaldehyde from the air.
However, the Dream AirPursue PM20 isn’t just an air purifier. It also cools and heats. The cooling fan won’t take the place of an air conditioner or one of our best fans, but it does provide a cool breeze. Since I tested the machine in June and July, I couldn’t really tell you how effectively it heats a cold room – but it does produce hot air.
The AI Detect feature is cool. When in Auto mode, the air flow follows me around (by “air flow” I mean the large top portion of the air purifier that looks like a satellite dish) – so when I walk to the left, it turns to the left, and when I go in the opposite direction, it follows me to the right as well. However, if there are 2 or more people on different sides of the room, the airflow will oscillate from one side of the room to the other in an attempt to accommodate everyone.
When the air purifier is on a low setting, I can barely hear it. The noise level at various fan speeds are as follows:

Fan speed on 10: 65.4dB
Maintenance was pretty simple. Based on 12 hours of daily usage, the high-efficiency compound filter should last 2 years, and the activated carbon filter should last one year. An alert will pop up on the air purifier’s display panel – and on the app as well – when the filters need to be replaced. On a weekly basis, I wiped the air purifier’s exterior with a soft cloth and vacuumed the filters.

You like a device with a lot of features
The sensors detect and provide information on PM1s, PM2.5s, PM10s, formaldehyde, TVOCs, temperature, and humidity. You can use onboard controls, the remote, app, or voice control. And there’s a fan and a heater.
You have a lot of carpet and will move the air purifier around a lot
The Dreame AirPursue PM20 weighs 39.5 pounds. The air purifier has wheels to help it roll easily on hard floors. However, on carpet, those wheels are like bricks, and there’s no movement at all, so you’ll have to pick it up.
Final Thoughts
There’s so much to like about the Dream AirPursue PM20 Purifier – although its long name isn’t one of those things. While large, it’s a stylish machine that looks remarkably similar to a Dyson, for hundreds of dollars less. The 400 CADR is the average for smoke, pollen, and dust, and it’s significantly higher than most air purifiers, and quickly removes pollutants from the air. However, the air purifier will look out of place in tight spaces, and while it’s more budget-friendly than Dyson, it’s not exactly a budget choice.
