Govee Ceiling Light Ultra Review

Verdict

The Govee Ceiling Light Ultra takes the idea of a smart ceiling light and pushes it well beyond simple illumination, turning it into part light fitting, part pixel display and part smart home notification hub. It isn’t cheap, but it comfortably undercuts the Philips Hue Datura while offering features that simply doesn’t have. The animations won’t fool anyone into thinking you’ve mounted a TV to your ceiling, but they’re great fun, the lighting performance is excellent, and the app is packed with enough customisation to keep tinkerers busy for weeks. If you want a smart ceiling light that does far more than brighten a room, this is currently the one to beat.

  • Excellent brightness

  • Fun pixel panel effects

  • Feature-packed app

  • Matter compatible

  • Expensive

  • Quite bulky

  • Animations lack smoothness

Key Features

Introduction

First teased back in January at CES 2026, the Govee Ceiling Light Ultra takes the smart light specialist’s existing ceiling light formula and cranks it up, both in size and ambition… but also price.

Costing £249.99, it’s a fair chunk of change more than the ceiling lights before it but, in terms of specs and performance blows its predecessors out of the water.

At 21 inches across, it is the biggest model Govee has made so far and it’s aimed squarely (roundly?) at larger rooms. Govee tells us it can comfortably light spaces up to 320 square feet, with output hitting 5,000 lumens.

Smart ceiling lights are becoming quite the thing in the smart home. I’ve tested a few in the past few months, including the likes of the Philips Hue Datura, the Lifx SuperColor and the Aqara Ceiling Light T1M but in terms of sheer fun and performance, none can really rival the latest Govee champion.

Read on for my full Govee Ceiling Light Ultra review to find out why.

Design and installation

  • Needs secure fixing
  • Easy to install

At 21 inches across it’s not the biggest smart ceiling light on offer, but it only falls 1.5 inches short of the Hue Datura and it is around half the price of that whopper.

21 inches is still a decent jump over the older 12 and 15-inch versions though, and the 5,000 lumens also represents a hefty upgrade on those two as well, as they top out at 2,400 and 4,300 lumens respectively.

The unit itself is pretty chunky and not all that amazing to look at when powered off, but the silver edge makes it look more premium than plasticky.

The physical installation is pretty straightforward, requiring just five screws to secure the mounting bracket, allowing you to have it fixed onto the ceiling in next to no time. Make sure you have a beam to attach it to: it weighs over 4kg.

There is a metal cable on the body to clip it to the frame during installation, to make wiring it up easier and to stop it whacking you in the face mid-install.

It’s very doable solo if you’re strong enough to lift it; I had mine up and running in less than 15 minutes.

Also, pay close attention to the bracket’s alignment during installation; its physical orientation permanently dictates which way your projected images will face.

Pairing and the app

  • Matter compatible
  • Can pair via Bluetooth

Once you’ve got the thing stuck to your ceiling then setting it up and syncing it with your smart home is straightforward.

You simply power it on (presuming you turned the electric off at the mains to install it, right?) and it lights up bright white to signal it is ready to pair.

Syncing the Ultra to your smart home is possible in a couple of different ways; either directly using the Matter QR code (which is found around the trim) or using Bluetooth through the Govee app.

I took the app route – and it’s the one I’d recommend. On Matter, you are limited to basic controls that treat the fixture as a standard smart light, albeit two of them.

You can, of course, sync to the Govee app and then pair to Matter, to get it included in your wider smart home routines too, and it’s also compatible directly with Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Samsung SmartThings too, on the more traditional skill setup.

But you will want to pair it through the Govee app if you actually want to do anything interesting.

Lots of interesting things, in fact. Under the Scene tab you’ll find a multitude of different lighting effects, categorised under headings like Atmosphere, Festival, Natural and Life; with names like Mountain, Enthusiastic and Rustling Leaves.

There are over 100 on offer and 144 rhythmic combinations of main and backlights.

But it’s the pixel art feature that will get most of the attention. You can either create your own moving designs, download ones that the community have designed (such as World Cup themed ones) or, and it gets incredibly detailed here, by using the finger sketch mode and colouring in those 616 “pixels”.

You can even upload an image to have that painted in lights as well.

There’s also the AI Lighting Bot 2.0, that you can chat or text with, in order to create personalised lighting effects. Think things like ‘Smiley emoji face,’ or ‘Boy and dog playing football,’ and the bot will use its AI smarts to match your prompt to a lighting effect.

Brightness and performance

It’s so bright, even at 40% on white light, it’s plenty to light up my garden office. It’s not quite the 5,390 lumens of the Datura… but not far off.

It can also  go down to 1% which is great for a night light.

It’s not just about sheer output, though. The dual lighting zones make it much more than just a ceiling lamp.

Because the two lights are treated as separate, individually addressable lights, within the likes of Apple Home, Alexa and Google Home, so you can incorporate just one or both parts into your home automations and, of course, control them with your voice.

So you could create custom automations where 2nd light could be used for notifications, such as having the upward facing ring glow green if the doorbell rings, light up blue if a flood is detected, or shine blue if a water leak is detected.

Inside the Ultra is an array of 616 individually controllable LEDs arranged in what Govee describes as a screen-style matrix.

What this actually results in is a low-res display of sorts, to project moving, automated animations. While the effect is perfect for a bit of fun, don’t expect liquid-smooth motion, the animations play out a bit like a low-refresh-rate GIF; i.e. heavily diffused imagery rather than anything sharp.

There’s a secondary backlight ring that throws color onto the ceiling or walls, adding a bit more depth beyond the main panel. This model also uses dual white-light LEDs across both the front and rear lighting, which should help with overall brightness and balance.

There’s also a new DaySync feature, which adjusts brightness, color and temperature automatically based on the time of day.

It can track local sunrise and sunset timings and shifts the light to match, which isn’t a new idea, but it arguably makes more impact here given how bright and massive this thing is.

Should you buy it?

You want more than a ceiling light

If you want varied light scenes, animations or to show images, this is the light for you.

You want something cheaper

If you just want smart utility lighting, you can get that elsewhere for less.

Final Thoughts

The Ceiling Light Ultra is another reminder that Govee is happy to try ideas that more established lighting brands wouldn’t dare. Govee has created something that feels playful without sacrificing practicality.

The huge library of scenes, the AI-generated effects, community pixel art and dual lighting zones make it feel like there’s always something new to experiment with.

It isn’t perfect. The animations are deliberately low resolution, Matter only scratches the surface of what the light can do, and the costs is a significant investment.

But when you compare what it offers against similarly priced or even much more expensive rivals, it’s surprisingly easy to justify.

If you want a smart ceiling light that simply fades on at sunset, there are cheaper options. If you want one that can light your room, display pixel art, act as a smart home notifier and still deliver excellent white and colour lighting, the Govee Ceiling Light Ultra is in a league of its own.

How We Test

We test every smart light we review thoroughly over an extended period of time. We use industry standard tests to compare features properly. We’ll always tell you what we find. We never, ever, accept money to review a product.

Find out more about how we test in our ethics policy.

  • Used as our main smart light for the review period
  • Tested for at least a week
  • We measure the light output from bulbs at different colour temperatures and colours so we can compare light output
  • We test compatibility with the main smart systems (HomeKit, Alexa, Google Assistant, SmartThings, IFTTT and more) to see how easy each light is to automate

FAQs

Is the Govee Ceiling Light Ultra Matter compatible?

Yes, although you need to use the Govee app to get animations, images and more.
