Husqvarna Aspire PS30X-P4A Review

Verdict

Powerful and flexible, the Husqvarna Aspire PS30X-P4A uses 18V Power For All Alliance Batteries, letting it cut through branches up to 30mm thick with ease. The downside is that the tool is a little heavy. That aside, with an optional pole system as well, these secateurs provide a brilliant level of flexibility.

  • Very powerful

  • Battery compatible with other tools from other manufacturers

  • Progressive cut

Key Features

Introduction

Pruning is an essential but often tiresome job, which is where a powered set of secateurs, such as the Husqvarna Aspire PS30X-P4A, comes into play. Powerful and easy to use, they make life much easier.

Compatible with the 18V Power For All Alliance batteries, these tools offer flexibility but at great weight than their rivals. Is handling or power more important? Read on to find out.

Design and features

  • Works with Power for All Alliance batteries
  • Two cutting widths
  • Slightly back heavy

The Husqvarna Aspire PS30X-P4A is the second set of powered secateurs that I’ve seen after the Stihl ASA 20 Cordless Secateurs. While Stihl’s product uses its tiny 10.8V AS 2 batteries, the Aspire PS30X-P4A is compatible with the full-size 18V Power For All Alliance batteries.

These work in tools from multiple manufacturers, including Bosch, so there’s wider compatibility and you’re not locked into buying all of your tools from Husqvarna.

The slight downside is that this battery makes the Husqvarna Aspire PS30X-P4A slightly heavier than its Stihl rival (1.35kg with the provided 2Ah battery vs just under 1kg). I’d say the ASA 20 is slightly easier to handle; the battery’s placement on the Husqvarna Aspire PS30X-P4A makes it slightly heavier at the back, so it naturally wants to tilt back.

Batteries are charged in the provided charger.

Once inserted into the tool, the onboard battery meter lets me keep an eye on the current charge status, with the display front and centre as it should be.

There’s a power button to turn the Husqvarna Aspire PS30X-P4A on, and then it needs two quick squeezes of the trigger to unlock the blades.

Holding the trigger down let me adjust between the two opening size 25mm or the maximum of 30mm. Thanks to the more powerful battery here, the Husqvarna Aspire PS30X-P4A’s maximum opening and cutting size is 5mm thicker than on the ASA 20.

Using the Husqvarna Aspire PS30X-P4A is easy. Progressive cut means that the blades follow the trigger exactly, so cutting only requires as small a trigger press as is needed. This system makes the Husqvarna Aspire PS30X-P4A responsive to use.

In addition to handheld use, there’s an optional pole system for long reach, which adds flexibility.

The blades should be cleaned after use, and after heavy use or before long-term storage, they should be lubricated with Husqvarna-approved oil. The blades are protected by the hard plastic scabbard.

When not in use, there’s a hanging bracket that can be screwed to a shed wall. Then, the secateurs slide onto it, so they’re easy to grab when not in use.

Performance

  • Powerful cutting
  • Long battery life

I found the Husqvarna Aspire PS30X-P4A exceptionally powerful. For standard pruning jobs on lighter material, such as a buddleia, the blades slice through the growth like they weren’t even there.

Move to a harder material, such as my rosemary bush, and this tool could easily cut through branches up to 30mm thick. There’s no noticeable resistance to the blades, and I could quickly snip back the growth, working much faster than with hand secateurs.

Battery life is rated at around 1500 to 2000 cuts, based on the provided battery. You could use a larger 18V battery, although that adds to the weight, which would change the handling; I’d stick with the provided 2Ah battery. Besides, the kind of battery life you can expect from the regular battery is long enough for any typical garden job.

Should you buy it?

You want power and flexibility

Easily able to cut through branches up to 30mm thick and with an optional pole system, this is a brilliantly flexible set of powered secateurs.

You want something lighter

If you need a more nimble, lighter tool, get one that uses a smaller battery system.

Final Thoughts

I think that the Stihl ASA 20 is slightly easier to handle, as it’s better balanced and lighter, but the Husqvarna Aspire PS30X-P4A has its advantages: it works with the 18V Power For All Alliance batteries, it can be used on the optional pole system, and it’s more powerful. If you want the maximum flexibility, then this is a great tool

FAQs

Can you use the Husqvarna Aspire PS30X-P4A’s battery in other tools?

Use, the 18V Power For All Alliance battery can be used in other Husqvarna tools and those from other manufacturers, too.
