SwitchBot’s Candle Warmer Lamp is exactly what it sounds like: a flameless lamp that gently heats a candle from above, melting the wax to release fragrance without smoke, soot, or open flames.
What makes this one different (and a little ridiculous in a good way) is that it’s the world’s first Matter over Wi-Fi smart candle warmer.
At under £40, it’s a fun, accessible smart home accessory rather than a luxury but, after living with it for a while, I have to say I was actually pretty impressed.

For something so specific, the Candle Warmer Lamp looks surprisingly polished. The design is clean and modern, with a slim tube-style base and arm supporting a hood that hangs directly over the candle.
It stands roughly 30cm, with the bulb positioned about 20cm above the candle surface, which feels just right for most standard candle jars.
It’s available in either black or white and blends in easily on a side table or shelf without screaming “smart device.”
In the box, SwitchBot includes the lamp itself, a wired smart controller integrated into the power cable, and two GU10 50-watt halogen bulbs.
The controller sits about 20cm down the cable and is shaped like a small plastic pebble with three buttons: one that handles power, another for adjusting brightness, and the third cycles through basic timer options.
From there, a longer 1.5m cable runs to the wall plug.
Setup is the same as with any other SwitchBot device, using the same SwitchBot app that you’d use for one of the Chinese brand’s robot cleaners like the K11+ or the Lock Ultra smart lock.
It pairs initially over Bluetooth and then name it, assign it to a room, and connect it to a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network.
The Matter QR code is printed on the back of the controller, if you want to go down that route.
It works with Alexa, Google Home, Homey, Home Assistant, SmartThings natively or using Matter. For Apple Home, you have to go down the Matter route.
The good news is, because it’s Matter over Wi-Fi, you don’t need a SwitchBot Hub for that extra interoperability as you can pair it to any Matter controller natively.
Normally, I always advise to add a Matter device directly to the brand’s app initially as that’s the only way you get the full feature set.
But that’s not really the case here. When paired through the SwitchBot app, it presents as a simple lamp with brightness up/down, with delay and scheduling options.
You should be able to do all of this in whatever ecosystem app you like using.

Strip away the smart home framing and what you’re left with is a very simple concept, executed pretty efficiently.
There’s a 50-watt halogen bulb housed inside a carefully shaped hood that directs both light and heat straight down onto the candle.
Turn it up to full brightness and the effect is almost immediate; in testing, the wax on a standard jar candle began melting within around five minutes.
Once a proper melt pool had formed, I was able to dial the brightness back to roughly 55% to keep the wax gently melted, maintaining a steady release of fragrance without overheating the candle.
That one-to-one relationship between brightness and scent intensity ends up being one of the lamp’s biggest strengths.
You’re not choosing between preset modes or guessing how strong the aroma might be. You just slide the dimmer until it feels right.
The lamp comfortably accommodates most common candle sizes, supporting jars up to 9.5cm wide and 14cm tall. I tested both soy-based essential oil candles and traditional beeswax, and both behaved exactly as you’d hope, with the heat melting only the top layer of wax rather than burning it away.
It’s worth noting that the lamp does get hot. There’s a warning sticker on the hood for good reason, and you definitely wouldn’t want to hold your hand underneath it for more than a second or two.

The key distinction here is that those regulations target inefficient lighting used for general illumination, not specialist applications where heat is the primary function. This lamp is far closer to a heater than a light.
At full brightness, it pulls about 52 watts. That works out to roughly 0.052 kilowatt-hours per hour of use, which translates to around 1.4p per hour in the UK, or under a cent per hour in the US.
Even a long five-hour evening session only adds up to a few pennies.
It’s undeniably less efficient than an LED GU10, but an LED simply doesn’t produce enough heat to do the job.
I tried swapping one in out of curiosity, and it flickered badly. SwitchBot is very clear that this lamp is designed specifically for GU10 50-watt halogen bulbs.
