Best Sports for Kids to Try in the San Francisco Area
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

With its parks, playgrounds, and year-round mild weather, San Francisco is a dream city for raising active kids. Whether you’re raising a fearless toddler or a curious pre-teen, there are plenty of kid-friendly sports to try out across the Bay Area. From the classics to the quirky, these 10 sports will keep your child moving, smiling, and learning valuable life skills.

1. Skateboarding

San Francisco’s legendary hills and thriving skate culture make it one of the best places to learn how to skateboard. Skateboarding teaches balance, resilience, and creativity. Even better, there’s a skateboard school right in the city offering private and group lessons for kids as young as 4.

“My daughter used to be nervous even standing on a board. After just a few lessons at the local skate school, she’s skating down the sidewalk with confidence!” — Maya R., Noe Valley mom

2. Swimming

Swimming isn’t just a vital life skill — it’s also a fun, full-body workout that builds coordination and strength. If you’re looking for personalized instruction, swim lessons from Nemo Swim School can come straight to your own pool, making learning even more accessible.

“With two kids under six, Nemo’s mobile swim lessons were a lifesaver. No more traffic jams getting to a rec center!” — Carlos D., Inner Sunset dad

3. Soccer

Soccer is a go-to sport for many San Francisco families — and for good reason. It’s fast-paced, social, and available in nearly every neighborhood. Programs like SF Youth Soccer and local school leagues make it easy to get started.

“What I love about soccer is that it teaches teamwork early on. Our son made his first real friends out on the field.” — Lana P., Richmond District parent

4. Rock Climbing

Indoor climbing gyms are booming in the Bay Area, offering kids a chance to build strength and problem-solving skills in a safe, supervised environment. Dogpatch Boulders and Planet Granite both offer youth programs for beginners.

“Climbing gave my daughter a real sense of accomplishment. Each new route she conquers boosts her confidence.” — Erin F., Mission Bay mom

5. Martial Arts

Karate, jiu-jitsu, and taekwondo aren’t just about kicks and punches. Martial arts help kids develop focus, discipline, and respect. Dojos throughout the city offer trial classes for kids of all ages.

“After just a few weeks of karate, my son is saying ‘yes ma’am’ and making his bed!” — Devon M., Bernal Heights dad

6. Gymnastics

For flexibility, body control, and fearless fun, gymnastics is hard to beat. SF offers plenty of options, including AcroSports and Head Over Heels, both with programs for toddlers through teens.

“Gymnastics helped my daughter develop strength I didn’t even know she had. Plus, it’s just fun!” — Sophie L., Hayes Valley

7. Surfing

It’s not just for Santa Cruz or SoCal — the Bay Area has surf camps for beginners at Pacifica and Ocean Beach. With wetsuits and the right guidance, even young kids can learn to catch waves safely.

“Our weekend surf lessons have become a family ritual. The kids absolutely love it!” — James K., Outer Sunset

8. Tennis

Tennis builds agility, focus, and coordination. Golden Gate Park and Dolores Park often host youth lessons, and many clubs offer kid-friendly clinics and beginner classes.

“Tennis has been a game-changer — literally. It’s social, structured, and gives our kids a fun outlet.” — Kara and Jeff H., Twin Peaks

9. Basketball

From outdoor courts to indoor rec leagues, basketball is everywhere in SF. It’s especially popular with older kids and teens looking to improve teamwork and speed.

“My son has more confidence, better communication skills, and even better grades — all thanks to hoops!” — Malik R., Bayview dad

10. Dance and Movement Arts

While not a traditional sport, dance programs like hip hop, ballet, and capoeira give kids all the benefits of sports — stamina, discipline, and expression — while letting them be creative.

“Capoeira is this perfect mix of martial arts, dance, and music. My daughter is hooked!” — Lena S., Potrero Hill mom

Different options – it is all up to You!

No matter what sport your child chooses, the benefits go far beyond the physical. They’ll gain confidence, friendships, and healthy habits for life. San Francisco offers endless opportunities to get moving — so why not try something new this season?
