Gina Marie and the Golden Bucks, Chicago’s Americana Gems, Shine with “Where the Blue of the Night Meets the Gold of the Day”

There’s something magical about taking a well-loved, classic tune and reimagining it with a modern twist. It’s like giving an old friend a fresh new outfit that still feels familiar but has a bit more flair. That’s exactly what Gina Marie and the Golden Bucks have done with their latest single, a cover of the beloved “Where the Blue of the Night Meets the Gold of the Day.”

This Chicago-based Americana band has been making waves by blending various genres from the American music canon. They weave together the sounds of Western Swing, Blues, Old Country, Rockabilly, and Early Jazz from the 1920s through the early 60s. But this isn’t just a mishmash of styles—it’s a carefully crafted blend that pays homage to the pivotal influences that shaped American music while making it feel like something brand new. And their rendition of “Where the Blue of the Night Meets the Gold of the Day” is a perfect example of that.

For those unfamiliar, “Where the Blue of the Night Meets the Gold of the Day” was originally sung by Bing Crosby and became one of his signature tunes in the early 1930s. It’s a tender, sentimental song about love and longing that has stood the test of time. Gina Marie DeGregorio and her crew have taken this classic jazz ballad and reimagined it as a midcentury country waltz. It feels like something you’d want to slow dance to in a dimly lit honky-tonk, or maybe while sitting on a porch, watching the sunset over the horizon.

One of the standout features of this rendition is the exquisite instrumental work. Edgar Gabriel’s fiddle and John Rice’s dobro create a warm, haunting duet that dances gracefully around Gina’s earthy vocals. These instruments take center stage, allowing the song to breathe while adding a touch of vintage flair. Gina’s harmonies, reminiscent of the vocal “sister” groups of the 1920s and 30s, are layered beautifully throughout the track, evoking a sense of nostalgia while staying grounded in the Americana roots that the band is known for.

This is not just a straightforward cover—it’s an artistic reimagining. By pulling in elements of midcentury country and combining them with early jazz, Gina Marie and the Golden Bucks have created something that feels both timeless and entirely their own. It’s a perfect example of the band’s unique ability to blend genres and give old classics a fresh perspective.

The band’s musical journey has been nothing short of fascinating. Bandleader Gina Marie DeGregorio is no stranger to the Chicago music scene, having spent years as a drummer and vocalist for various projects. Her path took a turn after vocal surgery, which unexpectedly gave her a wider range and a more nuanced sound. After recovering, she dove headfirst into Chicago’s early jazz community, eventually pulling together a lineup of top-tier musicians from across the Midwest. The Golden Bucks were born, and they’ve been creating their distinct blend of Americana ever since.

This release follows their debut single, “Pastures of Plenty,” which dropped earlier this year to rave reviews from outlets like Folk N Rock, Nora Gouma, The Bandcamp Diaries, and more. Their ability to tap into the deep well of American music history while putting their unique spin on it has quickly made them a band to watch in the Americana scene.

“Where the Blue of the Night Meets the Gold of the Day” is just the second single off their upcoming album, but if this track is any indication, the album is going to be a treasure trove of beautifully crafted songs that take listeners on a journey through America’s musical past. The album itself will feature 10 tracks, each representing a different region and era in the evolution of American music, with sounds rooted in everything from Appalachian bluegrass to the jazz clubs of New Orleans.

For Gina Marie and the Golden Bucks, this album isn’t just about paying tribute to the past—it’s about showing how all these seemingly disparate genres are interconnected and how they’ve all shaped the music we know and love today. Their sound is like a love letter to American music history, tied together by Gina’s rich, soulful voice.

So, if you’re a fan of old country, early jazz, or just music that makes you feel something, do give “Where the Blue of the Night Meets the Gold of the Day” a listen. You’ll be transported back in time while being reminded of the present—a perfect blend of past and future, much like the golden hour itself.
