Design

The Trust Gaming GXT 980 Redex is about as typical-looking a gaming mouse as you’re likely to see: it’s matte-black, and it’s got six buttons, including the two on the side and the DPI button on top.
But ‘typical’ is really what you want from a budget gaming mouse, and the Redex is attractive, mostly because of the RGB on the scroll wheel and around the base.
It’s symmetrical, meaning it doesn’t try to fit itself to your hand. It’s not suitable for left-handers, though, because the side buttons are on the left. The mouse is relatively small and flares out a little at the front. There are no side grips, which might be a deal-breaker for some.
The scroll wheel feels quite light, while its rubber is not monumentally grippy, but is definitely not too smooth.
The micro-USB receiver, required for a wireless connection, can be stored in a removable top panel on the mouse. A braided cable is included, for wired use, and for charging. At around 170 cm, the cable is decent length and floppy enough that it won’t influence your aim.

The mouse feet are basic plastic, nothing to write home about, but nothing to write letters of complaint about, either. The mouse moves smoothly and doesn’t drag despite being fairly weighty (86 grams without cable and USB receiver, and 111 grams with it).
The sensor’s max 10,000 DPI is a generous at this price. It kept up with the faster-paced games I tested it with, League of Legends, Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodhunt, Warframe, and a few other games. In League, I moved my summoner’s skills to the side buttons, which worked very well.
Battery life also lasted a long while. I can’t confirm it makes for 50 hours of continuous use, but it did last five days on one charge as my main mouse with the RGB lighting turned off, and roughly 3 days with the lighting on.

But there are limitations: mouse buttons can only be mapped to other mouse buttons, macros can only involve keypresses (not mouse clicks), and you can’t use them to (directly) launch programs or run scripts. Similarly, lighting patterns are fixed; you can’t modify them, or program your own.
But you can adjust DPI in increments of 100, and save up to 7 settings to cycle through with the DPI switchers, and you can group all of your settings into up to five profiles.
