A crash involving a tour bus and an S.U.V. in Los Angeles early on Sunday morning killed at least one person and left 32 other people injured, the authorities said.
The crash happened around 5 a.m. on the 60 Freeway in Hacienda Heights, which is about 20 miles southeast of the city of Los Angeles.
When firefighters arrived, the S.U.V., a Nissan Pathfinder, was fully engulfed in flames and trapped the driver inside, but the fire did not spread to the bus, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
The male driver of the Nissan, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, was declared dead on arrival, said Officer Zachary Salazar of the California Highway Patrol. The driver has not yet been publicly identified.
For an unknown reason, the Nissan became disabled in a travel lane of the highway, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The tour bus, driven by Sui Sheng Du, was coming down the highway in the same lane and crashed into the back of the disabled vehicle. The bus then veered across all lanes of traffic before hitting the guardrail on the right shoulder of the highway, the news release said.
There were 63 people on the bus, Officer Salazar said. Six people were taken to hospitals for serious injuries, said Fredrick Fielding, a public information officer for L.A. County Fire. Twenty-six other patients were taken to hospitals with minor injuries, he said.
The remaining passengers were transported on a second bus from the crash scene.
Photos show the bus tilted on the shoulder of the highway with damage to its front and its windshield shattered.
Police do not believe alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
The westbound side of the highway was closed on Sunday morning after the crash.
