Cupertino, CA – Everyday household environments commonly rely on trays, bowls, or designated surfaces to hold frequently used personal items such as keys, wallets, badges, and small electronics. While these objects serve as collection points, they do not maintain any record of item placement or assist in locating specific items after they are placed.
Labarcasa Robotics is developing an approach that extends this familiar form factor into an assistive storage system.
The concept centers on a compact, tray-like storage object intended for placement in common locations such as entryways, desks, or nightstands. The object is designed to receive everyday items without requiring any structured organization, predefined compartments, or manual input from the user.
In contrast to conventional trays, the system is designed to maintain an internal representation of items placed within it and to support subsequent identification or location of those items. The interaction model remains consistent with existing habits: items are placed and retrieved in the same manner as with a passive container.
The design objective is to preserve the simplicity of a standard storage surface while introducing limited assistive behavior that reduces the effort associated with locating recently placed objects.
The physical form is minimal and non-intrusive, intended to integrate into existing environments without requiring changes to user routines. The system does not depend on explicit user configuration and operates in the background during normal use.
This work is part of a broader exploration into how everyday objects can incorporate localized awareness and assistive functionality while maintaining familiar interaction patterns.
