‘Running Point,’ Plus 5 Things to Watch on TV This Week
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Between streaming and cable, there is a seemingly endless variety of things to watch. Here is a selection of TV shows and specials that air or stream this week, Feb. 24-March 2. Details and times are subject to change.

Home is where the good food is.

If you watch “Queer Eye” you know that the show’s food expert Antoni Porowski loves nothing more than nosing around in people’s fridges and sampling even the most questionable looking item. On his new show, “No Taste Like Home With Antoni Porowski,” he’s digging even deeper by learning the family history of celebrity guests and taking them on a culinary journey related to their ancestors. Whether it’s Britain with Florence Pugh, Germany with James Marsden or Korea with Awkwafina, you can be sure Porowski will be luxuriating in new foods. Streaming Monday on Hulu and Disney Plus.

Let’s get down to business.

Though medical dramas never went out of style, they’re back in full force this season — including the new series “Berlin ER,” a German-language show that follows Dr. Parker (Haley Louise Jones) as she starts working in an extremely chaotic and understaffed emergency room in, you guessed it from the title, Berlin. Her task is to unite her team to work the best they can in a broken system. The series has an eight-episode arc with a new one coming out every week. Streaming on Wednesday on AppleTV+.

There seems to be no rest for Mindy Kaling, who is back at it just a month after the third season finale of her “The Sex Lives of College Girls.” This time she is a co-creator, alongside Elaine Ko and Ike Barinholtz, of “Running Point,” a comedy that follows Isla Gordon (Kate Hudson), a former party girl who has to take on the role of managing the L.A. Waves, a fictional professional basketball team owned by her family. The cast also features Brenda Song, Justin Theroux and Max Greenfield. Streaming on Netflix on Thursday.

Surviving in Fiji.

One could argue that what’s even more impressive than the contestants winning this competition show is that “Survivor” has successfully aired 47 seasons since 2000 — and now it’s about to start its 48th. Since 2016, the show has been filmed on the Mamanuca Islands, Fiji and there eighteen contestants will be split up into three tribes: Civa, Lagi, and Vula. And who knows — after this, they could end up on a season of “Traitors” like Boston Rob or Carolyn Wiger have. Wednesday at 8 p.m. on CBS.

The dark side of mommy vloggers.

Just as swiftly as the rise of influencers on YouTube, TikTok and Instagram came, so did the controversial sub genre of mommy vloggers — content creators who prominently feature their children, though, technically, the children are not able to consent to being filmed or earn any of the revenue, despite being the driving force behind viewers’ clicks. One of the darkest examples of this is Ruby Franke, who ran a YouTube channel entitled 8 Passengers documenting her life in Utah with her husband and six children, posting five times a week to 2.5 million subscribers. In 2023, Franke and her friend Jodi Hilderbrand were charged with aggravated child abuse; last year, they both pleaded guilty to four counts, and have been sentenced to between four and 30 years in prison. The new documentary series “Devil in the Family: The Fall of Ruby Franke” takes a closer look at the family’s rise to popularity and the horrors that were happening behind the scenes. Streaming on Thursday on Hulu.

And the Academy Award goes to …

After a very long and tumultuous award season (postponements from the Los Angeles fires, plus the “Emilia Perez” drama), things are finally winding down with the 97th Academy Awards. Taking place live from the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, Conan O’Brien is set to host with Selena Gomez, Oprah Winfrey, Ben Stiller and many others presenting. “Emilia Perez” is up for the most nominations, 13, including for best picture. “The Brutalist” and “Wicked” are each up for 10. Kyle Buchanan, in his New York Times column, noted an interesting statistic: For the first time since 1978, all of the best actress nominees are in best picture-nominated movies, indicating a strong lineup. Will “Emilia Perez” sweep? Are the Oscars going to follow the Critic’s Choice Awards led and give best picture to “Anora”? We’ll all have to tune in to see. Sunday at 7 p.m. on ABC and streaming on Hulu.
