Was the past year defined by Beyoncé’s “Renaissance,” a nostalgia-minded tour of club music from the recent past as well as the not-so-recent past? Or was it shaped by Rosalía’s “Motomami,” an album of restless futurism and post-genre exuberance?
Those two albums are the only releases that appeared on the year-end lists of all three New York Times pop music critics. Outside of those, they included pop and un-pop country music, New York drill rap, British post-punk, San Jose hardcore, nepo baby pop-punk and much more.
