In the grand setting of the World Health Organization (WHO) Headquarters in Geneva, a distinguished panel of experts recently convened for a momentous roundtable discussion. These esteemed guests contributed invaluable insights during a parallel event attend of the 76th World Health Assembly focusing on the “Role of Biotechnologies in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through Health Promotion”. Guided by the valuable moderation of Dr. Ludovico Seppilli, the roundtable featured prominent individuals who shared their expertise and perspectives on the critical interplay between biotechnologies and health promotion.

Dr. Gabriella Sozanski, a Founding Board member of the Alliance for Health Promotion (A4HP) and WHO Focal Point in Geneva, set the stage by emphasizing the crucial role of biotechnologies in advancing the SDGs and promoting global health. She highlighted the transformative power of biotechnological advancements in addressing pressing global challenges.

Prof. Hussein Elsangak, Vice-President of A4HP and a distinguished scholar from Life University in the USA, took center stage to impart his wisdom on the profound “Philosophy of Life”. Prof. Elsangak expounded upon the philosophical foundations of chiropractic advancements, exploring their far-reaching implications for human existence and well-being.

Ms. Audrey Wong, the Public Health Chairperson of the International Pharmaceutical Students Federation (IPSF), offered a fresh perspective on the topic. Her presentation titled “The Youth Perspectives on Biotechnologies’ Role in Achieving SDG No. 4” shed light on the active role that younger generations can play in attaining sustainable development through the transformative power of biotechnologies.

Dr. Faten Benabdelaziz, the Head of the Well-being Unit at the WHO Department for Health Promotion, graced the roundtable with her expertise. Dr. Benabdelaziz emphasized the need to harness biotechnological innovations in creating environments that foster well-being, enabling individuals and communities to thrive.

The roundtable continued with a series of profound insights from esteemed speakers, each offering a unique perspective on the intricate relationship between biotechnologies and health promotion:

Prof. Robert S Marks from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel, delved into the topic of “A Career in One Health Sustainability: How Biotechnology Contributes to the World’s Pressing Needs.” He shed light on the significant contributions biotechnology and bioengineering makes in addressing global challenges and promoting holistic well-being.

Prof. Liborio Stuppia from the Center for Advanced Studies and Technology (CAST), ‘G. d’Annunzio’ University of Chieti-Pescara, Italy, eloquently discussed the intricate relationship between “Genes and Diet in the Prevention of Chronic Diseases in Future Generations.” His insights showcased the potential of biotechnological advancements in shaping the health outcomes of future generations.

Dr. Matteo Bertelli, the President of MAGISNAT, brought attention to the “Important Role of Mediterranean Diet Polyphenols in Preventing Non-Communicable Diseases.” His presentation shed light on the beneficial impact of biotechnologies in promoting healthier lifestyles and preventing chronic illnesses.Prof. Munis Dundar, the President of the European Biotechnology Thematic Network Association Society (EBTNA), provided a global perspective on “Biotechnological Uses in Protective Health

Services Worldwide.” Prof. Dundar emphasized the transformative power of biotechnologies in enhancing health services and improving the well-being of populations across the globe.

Prof. Tommaso Beccari from the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Perugia, Italy, addressed the pressing issue of “Eating Disorders Affecting Younger Generations.” His insights shed light on the potential of biotechnologies in understanding and addressing this growing concern.

Prof. Sandro Michelini from the Vascular Diagnostics and Rehabilitation Service, Marino Hospital, Italy, focused on the intricate “Genetic and Epigenetic Causal Factors in Lipedema.” Prof. Michelini’s discourse showcased the role of biotechnologies in unraveling the underlying factors contributing to lipedema and advancing treatment options.

Prof. Antonio Amoroso from the Department of Medical Sciences, University of Turin, Italy, provided a compelling discussion on “Genomic Approaches for the Diagnosis and Prevention of Genetic Diseases.” His presentation highlighted the transformative potential of biotechnologies in advancing genetic medicine and improving diagnostic and preventive strategies.

Dr. Carlo Zuccato, an AERSAFE Researcher, concluded the roundtable with his presentation on “The Importance of Air Purification in Epidemics Prevention.” Dr. Zuccato shed light on the critical role of biotechnologies in maintaining air quality and preventing the spread of epidemics.

The roundtable at the WHO Headquarters in Geneva served as an intellectual gathering of brilliant minds, each contributing to the advancement of knowledge and the pursuit of health promotion through the lens of biotechnologies. With their diverse perspectives and expertise, these experts provided valuable insights into the interplay between biotechnologies and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Through collaboration and innovation, biotechnologies hold immense potential in shaping a healthier and more sustainable future for all.

In conclusion, our primary focus is to create a position paper that emphasizes the importance of the Mediterranean Diet in preventing Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). We specifically examine the role of individual genetic predispositions, lifestyles, and the pressing issue of climate change. This endeavor is closely aligned with the World Health Organization’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which sets forth a comprehensive vision for global well-being. By shedding light on the crucial role of the Mediterranean Diet as a preventive measure against NCDs, our aim is to promote a deep comprehension of its potential impact on overall health worldwide. Through this exploration, we strive to raise awareness and understanding of the Mediterranean Diet’s significance in improving global health and well-being.
